The Challenge - Education
A Solution : Partners in education

In Historic Treme, the hallways of Craig Elementary School are shining again after years of neglect.

While three old classrooms have now been transformed into a spacious new library, and a whole new world of learning.

Yet these Craig students still face the same challenge as thousands of their peers.

More than 40 percent of all metro area fourth graders currently fall below basic LEAP test levels - a critical yardstick for academic skills.

Today, hearts and hands from across our community are coming together to help change those statistics.

As one of Craig school's partners, WWL-TV has contributed new computers and software to the school library, so we can help students "leap" into the 21st Century.

You can become a partner as well. Like most major urban school systems, the New Orleans Public School system lacks sufficient resources to meet all

Each One Save One

Each One Save One is a non-profit organization dedicated to reversing the plight of children in our community through recruiting, training and supporting an army of volunteer mentors throughout the metro area.

Each One Save One provides mentors to existing programs and works with school districts and local governments to establish workable mentoring programs where none exist.

Each One Save One
was founded in 1994 by local business woman Cathy Harris and WWL-TV's Sally Ann Roberts. By May of 2001, more than 350 mentors were working with young people in our community. Mentors go to area schools and work with children for at least one hour per eek on a variety of activities, including: reading, talking, homework, arts and crafts and college test preparation.
